
This time I will try to share about how to repair a damaged hard drive due to power surge. Actually this is just a personal experience when I fix the customer's hard disk damaged by short-circuit. So theoretically scientific accountability electronics, I myself can not answer, obviously it's work and success.
Hard disk which I fixed is 40Gb Seagate barracuda. Why I can conclude that this hard drive short-circuit? The reason is the condition of total dead hard drive as well as the voltage condition in the residence of the customer often up and down power outages often occur suddenly. so I concluded that the damage was caused by the hard drive voltage is not balanced.
Actually there are several causes that can lead to short-circuit the hard drive, including:
1. The existence of excess voltage that flows from the power supply (over voltage)
2. Received unbalanced voltage power supply, so the voltage is out of balance (up and down)
3. Fluid from the dead and decaying animals or manure, eg lizards, cockroaches, rats, etc.
Before you fix the hard drive, you should first prepare the equipment
- Screwdrivers, typically using a screwdriver stars
- Amperemeters, to check components
- Solder, lead solder, lacquers or can use the Flux
- Get ready to buy a diode or other device can be picked up from the same origin.
If the preparations have been completed, the next step that we can use.
Note, there are two forms of the board hard board with components placed in and some are placed outside, but the general principle is the same.
First, open the board hard drive.
although the components located on the outside, should the board be kept open so that the heat generated in the solder does not affect the disk.
Short-circuit on the Seagate hard drive is often the case in the safety DIODE voltage 12 volt. Voltage 12 volt power supply cables are colored yellow. While the red wire voltage 5 volts. Sometimes safety DIODE voltage 5 volt surge but also rare.
Check the diode with ampere meter.
Replace the hard drive that short-circuit diode is the same diode (usually 1-2 Ampere) you can buy at your local electronics store. Remember, note the position of the anode and the cathode.
Actually, by simply removing the damaged diodes without replacing them, your hard drive is back to normal. But it is very vulnerable, because no meaning without protection diodes if there is over voltage / excess voltage.
Diodes serves as a filter of power, so that power flows to the other components can run stable.

With these measures as our hard drive was supposed to be back to normal. But if it turns out the hard drive after the repair is still not normal, the possibility of the hard disk chipset has joined a short-circuit or broken and we had to replace it.
But in case I pace like that, the hard drive is back to normal.
